It was not until 1989, when Emily Sunstein published her prizewinning biography Mary Shelley: Romance and Reality, that a full-length scholarly biography analyzing all of Shelley's letters, journals, and works within their historical context was published. After her death, however, she was chiefly remembered only as the wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley and as the author of Frankenstein. Mary Shelley was taken seriously as a writer in her own lifetime, though reviewers often missed the political edge to her novels.

As gothic horror it is a cautionary tale of the limits of man and science and reminds us of what happens when mankind moves forward with hubris as its motivating force. Most people will be surprised to learn that Frankenstein is actually the very first example of science fiction ever written. When she was four, her father married a neighbour, Mary Jane Clairmont, with whom Shelley came to have a troubled relationship.
She was raised by her father, who provided her with a rich if informal education, encouraging her to adhere to his own anarchist political theories. Shelley's mother died less than a month after giving birth to her.
